Though it’s shaped like a flute, the Bawu is a free reed instrument. It has a pure clarinet-like timbre, and players often incorporate the use of ornamentation, bending tones in particular.

This instrument most likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China and has become a standard instrument throughout. The Bawu is typically featured as a solo instrument in modern Chinese compositions for traditional ensembles and film scores alike.  Although this instrument is still predominantly performed in China, it has been embraced by many European composers and performers in recent years.

This virtual instrument is highly expressive, featuring multiple transition styles, including slur, slide, ornamental, and MICROPHRASE

Legato Styles

William recorded an exhaustive set of slurs, slides, and ornaments. These transitions were chosen especially for the bawu.

Micro Phrases

An Embertone first! There are 4 styles of Micro Phrases, unique mordents/licks envisioned by William Arnold himself!

Artistic Approach

This instrument was built from the ground up with William's musical approach. Performances and articulations to match his unique and beautiful style.

Performance

Shan Bawu is a simple, inspiring, and highly playable virtual instrument… right out of the box! With lots of helpful configuration settings to match your playing style.

Flexible Control

You like using the modwheel for vibrato and an expression pedal for dynamics? Or a CC2 breath controller instead? Assign it that way and get straight to playing!

Shān Bawu, or “Mountain Flute” is a virtuosic solo instrument developed in collaboration with performer William Arnold. The Bawu hails from southern China and sounds much more similar to a clarinet crossed with a bagpipe (if you were to play just the chanter and not the drones) than other true flutes (the Bawu actually is a reed instrument). Bawu is made from a tube of bamboo, has a single reed and open holes. Its characteristic performance style includes highly ornamented solo lines, complete with turns, trills and pitch bends. We've taken great care to capture the authentic playing style of this instrument.
